India issued Rs 80bn ($1bn) of sovereign green bonds yesterday. This is the country’s first sovereign green bond issue.

It sold 5 and 10 year bonds, at a small discount to its standard government debt. Green bond issuance may also increase funding capacity.

The use of proceeds will be environmental projects including clean transport, pollution prevention and supporting biodiversity projects.
